
Why Rolando Mendoza Hi-jacked A Bus
The Internet is abuzz of Rolando Mendoza. If you typed Rolando Mendoza on Google search, you'd have more than 5 million results and is the top topic among social media sites' Facebook and Twitter among others. Except, he's famous for all the wrong reasons.
Rolando Mendoza, a sacked policeman, armed himself with an M-16 rifle and took hostage a bus containing Hong Kong tourists. The hostage-taking took around ten hours before it was finally over. Over for the hostage-taker Rolando Mendoza and 8 Chinese nationals who were killed during the hi-jacking in Manila.
Why did Rolando Mendoza hijack the bus? He said, he wanted his old job back.
Rolando Mendoza was a former senior inspector who was fired last year for misconduct unbecoming a police officer. However, reports have it that Rolando Mendoza was really fired because he was among five officers who had been charged with robbery, extortion and grave threats after a Manila hotel chef filed a complaint alleging the policemen falsely accused him of using drugs to extort money.
Hong Kong issued a warning against travel to the Philippines and requested that Hong Kong tourists still in the country return. All upcoming tour groups were also canceled.
"I am very saddened by this tragedy. I am angered by the cold-blooded behavior of this murderer," said Tsang, the Hong Kong leader.
It sure is another sad day in Philippine history and one that leaves a black-eye on the P-noy's administration and the Philippines' tourism.
